Did You Know Your iPad Could Do This? 11 iPad Features Most People Never Use

You love your iPad. You spend hours every day with it. But are you getting the maximum functionality out of it? Probably not! Here are 11 iPad features that you probably didn’t know about and that will revolutionize how you use your favorite toy, I mean, work device.

1. Use your iPad as a second monitor

Sometimes you need a second screen. Luckily, there’s an app (or two or three) for that. Both iDisplay and Air Display allow you to turn your iPad into a second monitor for your computer.

2. Swipe between apps

Are you still navigating between apps via the Home Screen? Stop doing this. Instead, go to your settings and enable Multitasking Gestures. This will allow you to switch apps by swiping four or five fingers left or right and to view and select among open apps by swiping four or five fingers up. You can also pinch four or five fingers to return to the Home Screen.

3. Shake to undo typing

You know when you start an email and then change your mind — isn’t it annoying to have to delete the whole thing letter by letter? The good news is that you don’t! Just shake your iPad to bring up an alert box that allows you to “Undo Typing” all in one go.

4. Search for text on a web page

You can search for text on a web page using Safari. Type your search query into the address bar and then select “On This Page” from the dropdown menu.

5. Return to the top of a page with one touch

What do you do when you get to the bottom of a web page and then want to return to the top? Scroll, scroll, and scroll some more? There is an easier way. Tap the top of the screen, just above the address bar, and you will instantly return to the top of the page.

6. Sort your apps alphabetically

If you’ve downloaded a lot of apps, you know how annoying it can be to find the one you’re looking for. Fortunately, you can sort your apps alphabetically. Under Settings > General > Reset, select “Reset Home Screen Layout.” As scary as this sounds, what it does is to put all of the iPad default apps first, with everything you’ve downloaded afterward, arranged in alphabetical order.

7. Charge faster in Airplane Mode

You don’t always have all day to wait for your iPad to charge. Speed up the process by turning on Airplane Mode, which turns off the wireless, thus allowing more energy to be used to charge your device.

8. Take a screenshot

Need a screenshot to toss into Slack or email to colleagues? Just press the power button and the home button at the same time.

9. Program typing shortcuts

It’s kind of a pain to type on the iPad. Avoid excess typing by programming your own shortcuts in Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts. For example, you can program “ttyl” to automatically expand to become “talk to you later.”

10. Type numbers quickly

You don’t need to press the numbers button, and then the number you want to type, and then the letters button to return to the normal keyboard. Just press and hold the numbers button. When the numbers keyboard comes up, drag your finger to the number you want and release. Three gestures become one. This works for special characters and accents too.

11. Enable Reader Mode for a cleaner reading experience

Tired of all of those distracting sidebars and ads? Most sites now offer Reader Mode, which provides a much cleaner reading experience. On the left side of the address bar, look for three and a half stacked horizontal lines. Click that icon to enable Reader Mode. Click it again to disable. Note that you need to be at the top of the page for this feature to work. Your iPad can also be a receptionist!
